Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. – Joseph Pilates
A professional actor and mother of two, Tricia’s passion for Pilates began while earning her MFA in Acting at The University of Texas at Austin. In her training as an actor, she has spent years studying various principles of movement in an effort to lessen wear and tear on the body while offering a nearly limitless range of physical choices on stage. This fascination with an awareness through efficient, purposeful motion drives her continued work in the studio and in continuing education.
Originally from Augusta GA, Tricia earned scholarships for acting throughout her undergraduate degree and holds a BA in English from Augusta State University. When she chose to pursue an advanced degree in Theatre Arts, she had no idea how vastly her studies would touch her daily life. Aside from the more obvious potential injuries associated with complicated dance or fight choreography, simply moving on stage in a heightened state of mind can be exhausting for the body. In her extensive study of the principles of movement through Alexander, Feldenkrais, Suzuki and Laban, Tricia finds Pilates to not only inform but strengthen her resolve to a healthy, active and expressive physical life.
After completing her MFA, Tricia moved to Seattle and landed a major role at the world renowned Seattle Children’s Theatre playing a character who is a child of deaf adults. Her work as a physical actor paid off when she relied on her gestural and physical presence to communicate the arch of an amazing character. She continued taking private Pilates sessions to enhance this understanding, however it was her work for an internet security company that transformed her belief that the power of the mind/body connection provides not only comfort but safety in day to day tasks. Using her training on stage had become a given. Transferring this awareness into sitting at a desk and running to meetings with folders and a laptop in tow was what gave her a desire to share this awareness with individuals from all professional and social realms.
In Seattle, Tricia enjoyed two successful careers, that as a stage actor and as a manager for technical support engineering. She gave birth to her first child in 2001 and was again reminded through the rigors of labor how breath and relaxation could change one’s perception of pain. As a mother, she has relished observing the natural movement of her children, their innate efficiency in simple tasks, their beautifully long spines and even gentle bending at the joints to crawl, walk and play. For years, Tricia worked as a stay at home mom and part time performer. After moving to the Portland area nearly 5 years ago, she began to pursue her Pilates certifications while working for Salem Pilates and the YMCA. Earning her certifications through the Power Pilates organization, her passion for the classical system of work created by Joseph Pilates became a cornerstone of her work on and off the stage.
Today she lives in Portland with her 2 children, works professionally as a stage, commercial and film actor and shares her extensive knowledge of Pilates with clients of varied backgrounds and goals. Pilates is more than an exercise philosophy. It is a way of life. The repetition of motion provides an amazing framework with which to stretch and grow, to experience breakthroughs and enjoy the plateaus of a fully present existence. In strengthening one’s Powerhouse, clients will find comfort from injuries as well as tools to prevent future pain. Pilates is a recipe for any and all activities, from running to driving to dancing – finding and owning our connection to our bodies offers a presence of mind where confidence, acceptance, and courage can thrive.
